This News Organization is Empowering Nigerian Agriculture

With over 70% of Nigerians employed in agriculture, the sector undeniably forms the backbone of the nation's economy. Despite its significance, agricultural stories often remain underrepresented in the media, with farmers' voices unheard and their concerns unaddressed. Recognizing this gap, Farmers Voice emerged as a platform dedicated to amplifying the stories of Nigerian farmers and advocating for agricultural development.

Founded in 2023 by Yunusa Ya’u, director at the Centre for Information, Technology and Development, Farmers Voice aims to shed light on the challenges and successes within Nigeria's agricultural sector.

Farmers Voice doesn't merely report on farming practices and market trends; it actively engages with farmers and policymakers to influence policy decisions. Through workshops and expert guidance, the outlet equips farmers with knowledge on sustainable farming methods, irrigation techniques, and pest management.

Since its inception, Farmers Voice has tackled various issues affecting Nigerian farmers, from hippopotamus attacks on farmlands to the impact of bandit attacks on agricultural production. By highlighting both challenges and successes within the sector, the outlet provides valuable insights into the realities faced by farmers.

However, financial sustainability remains a significant obstacle for Farmers Voice. Limited funds hinder their ability to tell the stories they want to share and access remote farming communities. Despite these challenges, the outlet remains committed to delivering accurate and timely information to its readers.

For reporters looking to cover agriculture effectively, Abdulkareem Mojeed, an agricultural correspondent, advises thorough research and cultivating sources among farmers and policymakers.

"You must endeavor to understand the people, places and [agriculture]-related events; that is how you can build the confidence of your sources,” said Mojeed in his interview with the International Journalists’ Network (IJNET). “Field visits, for instance, help reporters understand the peculiarities of the environment."

Understanding agricultural policies, terminology, and legislative frameworks is essential for comprehensive reporting on the sector.
